This is going to be another one of those stories about how something truly changed my life. But stay with me here. I am going to back this one up with science. Let’s start by defining what in the actual world is Epigenetics? Epigenetics is the study of how our lifestyle and environment can impact how our genes express themselves. It’s kinda like the instruction manual for our health and wellness, in my opinion. But I promised you SCIENCE here, not just my opinion.
What is Epigenetics?
Let’s take a peek into the NIH study about Epigenetics for a minute. “For decades, scientists have known the basic structure of our DNA, the building blocks that make up our genes. Although nearly every cell in the human body has the same set of genes, why is it that different types of cells, such as those from brain or skin, look and behave so differently? The answer is epigenetics, a rapidly growing area of science that focuses on the processes that help direct when individual genes are turned on or off.”
So truly what we eat, what we put on our skin, our thoughts, our interactions, and our lifestyle are more important than we could have ever imagined.
Because we have the power to change what our DNA does and how it acts, we aren’t tied to a particular outcome. Even when it comes to disease. That is such a refreshing thing if you ask me. Especially coming from a recovering perfectionist that still likes to control what she can.
The Breaking Point
I found Epigenetics and the study of genes when I was truly at the breaking point in my healing journey. I had spent years, thousands of dollars, and so much time on protocol after protocol to get to the bottom of my health issues. We’re talking food sensitivities, candida, EBV, and more. I had already gotten my Hashimoto’s under remission through diet and lifestyle changes, so why wasn’t everything else following suit. I felt lost and frankly a little fed up with where my methods of support and healing were leading me at the time. It felt like going in circles or throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what would stick. Can you relate?
Interestingly enough, I picked up a copy of the book, Dirty Genes by Dr. Ben Lynch, and could not put it down. Things started to click for me. Strategies and philosophies that were so unique, but yet so familiar. So I went out and found myself an Epigenetics Coach that was able to give me my Genetic Blueprint and interpretations. My experience was so wonderful and painless. Something we can’t always say in the autoimmune world, am I right? A simple cheek swab and I was on my way to learning all about MY specific gene codes.
The ‘Aha’ Moment
What I learned about my body from my Genetic Blueprint was priceless. It’s like the wool had finally been pulled away from my eyes. I immediately started implementing changes based on what my panels said. These genetic panels cover nutrition, supplementation, sleep, athletic performance, hormones, and environmental detox. So comprehensive! It wasn’t the guess work I was used to before. Sure, I had experienced insights from tests I had done in the past, but this was different. This was exactly what MY genes and MY body were saying to me. I have kids that love to play video games, so this next reference is for them. It was like getting the cheat codes to my body.
You know what the best part is? My body responded. I felt like myself again. My skin cleared…finally. Candida is a beast, y’all. My inflammation was gone. I felt vibrant again. My energy levels skyrocketed. Finally… Answers!
The Epigenetics Business Baby
Being the true Enneagram 3 and lover of wellness that I am, this ‘Aha’ moment and the life-changing results I experienced led me to enroll into a program and become a Certified Epigenetics Coach. This kind of thing doesn’t happen over night, of course. And even though the decision was an easy one, I spent months studying and pouring my heart and soul into not only the genes, but creating a business that would be worthy of the women that I am meant to help. And hence the business baby of Mind Body Genes was birthed.
If you are thinking that this sounds like a whirlwind, you’d be right. The thing is that everything that led me to where I am today writing this article was completely necessary. All of the trials, the frustrations, the ‘Aha’ moments, the clarity. It all brought me to this passion that I didn’t even know was deep down inside of me all along.
