If you’re an apartment dweller like I am, it may be daunting to think of a staycation. You have been trapped in a small space for a few months now and it could be driving you slightly nuts. Places are starting to open up, but with our compromised immune systems, the fear of this disease may want you to stay local. You may not have the luxury of a balcony or patio space to spice up for some outdoor time; I don’t and it can get frustrating! So, what kind of staycation can you really have during this time?
When thinking about how I could spend my time stuck in my apartment for summer, I started reminiscing about places I’ve visited or places I want to get to at some point. So, why not transform your space for some themed evenings or days for a weekend or even a whole week? To start, do a nice tidying up of your space so that you can transform it to whatever your heart desires at that moment. Then, for a little inspiration, here are some of my ideas that will make it feel like I am on that vacation of a lifetime:
- Italy! This is on my list of places I want to visit. When I think of Italy, I think of all the amazing food, drinks, family, and laughter. So, why not spend time in your kitchen with loved ones, or invite a few friends over (if it is safe to!) and have an Italian themed dinner night! Put on “That’s Amore” on Spotify to bring in the Italian vibes, light lemon scented candles and grab the wine (If you can! There is also a very good non-alcoholic wine out there that tastes just as good! Fre is one of my favorites). You could sign up for an online cooking class (there are allergy specific ones here too), or whip out the pizza stone and make some homemade pizza. Here are some of my favorite recipes→ Vegan cheeseburger pizza, homemade gluten free pizza dough. Enjoy a night with your loved ones over delicious food and maybe even make yourself some yummy tiramisu for dessert!
- I’m not a big camper, but I love campfires and more importantly, roasting marshmallows for s’mores! Create a virtual campfire one evening and break out those marshmallow skewers! Collect some necessities like allergen friendly marshmallows, graham crackers and chocolate. Maybe even set up a blanket fort in your living room as your tent. Set the mood with these virtual campfire sounds, open the windows and dim the lights in the evening! Roast your marshmallows over the stove with your skewers or pop them in the microwave for 10 seconds if you don’t have a gas range. Build your s’more masterpiece and enjoy the sounds of the fire and nature. You can even play some campfire games with your loved ones and sleep in the blanket fort that night!
- Outdoor picnics. If you feel adventurous, go exploring in a new park or hiking trail and bring along a picnic lunch. Or just enjoy one at home if you can’t get outside. Grab a nice, large blanket, your picnic basket and make a delicious lunch! I love a good sandwich. Make some homemade bread and load on your favorites. My fave is a good chickpea salad with a bunch of fresh veggies. You could even get crazy and make your own charcuterie board to bring with fresh juices or wine. After a nice long walk or hike, find a spot to settle and just enjoy your delicious food and the warm summer breeze!
Summer is the time to spend with family and friends, bask in the sun, and explore new places. Just because you are “stuck” at home doesn’t mean you need to miss out on what summer can offer right in your own little apartment. I know at times a small space can be crowded and overwhelming, but just changing up the routine and doing something out of the ordinary can make a huge difference. Just remember to stay safe with everything going on in the world around us. Wear your mask, appropriately social distance if needed, but most importantly HAVE FUN! I wish that all you ladies have a delightful summer!
