I will be the first to admit that finding hope in the unknown is hard. Having the type of personality that likes to be in control mixed with my need to know it all attitude about life can create a real dilemma when things are up in the air or outcomes remain unknown. Over the past few months, we’ve all been handed a whole lot of unknown as well, haven’t we?
In the midst of the pandemic that we’re in and all of the challenges that it’s presented world-wide, we find ourselves in a huge sea of unknown territory. Lost jobs, homeschooling, businesses closing, mental health suffering, fear, and so much more. But the unique opportunity to find hope in the unknown presents itself to us as well. As an eternal optimist in addition to all my controlling qualities previously mentioned, I can’t help but to land in a place of gratefulness and hope. After the initial kicking and screaming of course. A girl has got to get the feelings out, you know?
Learning From Elsa
How do I end up at finding hope in the unknown? Simple. Have you seen Frozen 2? Ok. All jokes aside. I can’t help but bring a little bit of Elsa’s journey into this. #momlife! If you have seen the movie then you know about her journey to find out what this mysterious voice is calling to her about all along. Spoiler alert: it’s her. She is the voice that is calling her. Bear with me here as I connect the dots. Her signature song, Into the Unknown, goes like this:
“What do you want? ‘Cause you’ve been keeping me awake
Are you here to distract me so I make a big mistake?
Or are you someone out there who’s a little bit like me?
Who knows deep down I’m not where I’m meant to be?
Every day’s a little harder as I feel my power growDon’t you know there’s part of me that longs to go…
Into the unknown”
-Elsa, Frozen II
Relatable. Often times we feel so uncertain about the future that we ignore the voice inside of us that knows what to do. As we begin to listen to that voice inside is when we can truly find hope in the unknown and embrace things. After all, we may not be in control of the situations that we find ourselves in, but we are in control of how we choose to respond. Finding hope in the unknown can look a lot like finding your power and trusting yourself. It can also look a whole lot like picking yourself up and paving a path into the unknown. No pun intended.
Don’t Be Afraid Of The Unknown
What would it look like in our lives if we ran into the unknown? Faced it head on with the tenacity and grit that we all have deep down inside of us. We’re here because we are warriors. Fighters. Powerful sisters and daughters. We are capable and fully equipped to deal with the unknown and we know we are. Sometimes we forget our own strength and it can cause us to lose hope.
There is something very empowering and uplifting about looking into the face of our own fear and doing it anyways. Whatever that may look like for you, when you find yourself in the unknown, I hope you can take some time to feel your feelings, grieve, and maybe even kick and scream a little. But I hope most of all that afterwards, you find yourself embracing it, breaking through the fear, and finding hope in the unknown.
