MEET JESS
Hi! My name is Jess. I am a wife and momma, born and raised in the south. Although I have always “believed in God,” I did not receive salvation until after the birth of my first child in my mid-twenties. Two short weeks after my high school graduation, I began my career in a hospital radiology department.
DIAGNOSIS
Knowing what I know now, I have had IBD symptoms for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I frequently suffered from fatigue, abdominal pain/discomfort, and inconsistent/ irregular bowel movements. I just assumed everyone had the same symptoms because I had never known life to be any different. It wasn’t until 23 that I began having more severe symptoms, including blood in my stool. This got my attention, however, I received no help from 3 different doctors over the next 7 years. Finally, after switching to yet another PCP, she listened and was equally concerned. After two years, two colonoscopies, so much lab work and new doctors, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. After 2 years of anti-inflammatories, steroids, diet change, and probiotics, I began Remicade infusions.
LIFE CHANGE
Crohn’s Disease has brought about so much anxiety and worry. However, my relationship with God and my husband have grown tremendously. I would love a cure, but I am forever grateful that God has opened my eyes to His goodness through trials and the reassurance of support from my husband.
HEALING
Diet and movement are helpful in managing symptoms. The most valuable method of healing, for me, has been bible study. When I was first diagnosed in 2017, I studied the book of Job and felt such peace in all my pain, anxiety, and uncertainty. Seeking our Maker, our Father, the One who comforts… that is where true healing begins.
STRUGGLE
My biggest struggle is missing what life used to be. Before medications, diets, doctor’s visits, colonoscopies, and blood work. Trying to look and be positive is not always easy.
INSPIRATION
Consider it all joy when you face trails of various kinds, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. (James 1:2-3)
And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28)
Even when I cannot see the good in my diagnosis or my symptoms, I can find comfort in knowing that I am being refined, my faith is being strengthened, and all of the struggles are working together for the good of God. Let your story be a testimony for the goodness of God. The good is here, we just have to have faith to see it.
